Head of HR – Cambridge – c70k
This Head of HR brings calm, practical leadership to organisations that want strong people practice without over complication.
FCIPD-qualified and based near Cambridge, they offer over 20 years of HR experience across creative, digital, technology, and research-led settings. Their career shows depth and continuity, with a clear focus on fairness, sustainability, and long-term impact.
They are a hands-on HR generalist who has built functions from scratch, supported leaders through change, and stayed close to commercial reality. They do their best work in small to mid-sized organisations where HR needs to be visible, trusted, and grounded. Leaders value their clear judgement and proportionate advice.
Most recently, they spent almost six years as Head of People in a fast-paced knowledge based business. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, they worked closely with the CEO and directors to shape people and operations strategy.
Their remit covered recruitment, retention, leadership development, succession planning, and performance management within a people-first culture.
A major strength was building leadership capability. They supported managers to improve confidence and consistency, introduced career pathways and development plans, and handled complex HR issues with clarity and care.
Earlier roles include senior HR positions within engineering and technology businesses. As HR Manager and HR Business Partner, they led all site-based HR activity, contributed at leadership level, and acted as a trusted advisor to managers and employees.
They also worked with a high-growth tech business, progressing to Head of HR. Here, they built and evolved the HR function, managing complex employee relations, organisational change, reward and benefits, payroll, pensions, and end-to-end recruitment. They led key projects such as handbook rewrites, absence management systems, training needs analysis, and succession planning.
A key strength is balance. They combine a strong people focus with commercial realism. Their advice is pragmatic, fair, and cost-aware, helping organisations make sensible, compliant decisions without losing sight of values.
They are now open to Head of HR roles in and around Cambridge and are flexible on structure, including permanent or longer-term interim assignments. Salary expectation is around £70,000.
